New contract richly deserved as Middlesbrough fan favorite solves long-term dilemma: Opinion News: The72 – Football League News

Middlesbrough have signed goalkeeper Sol Brynn on a new contract, keeping him at the club until the summer of 2030.

Middlesbrough have had a fantastic 2025/2026 season so far. They may have tasted their first defeat Kim Hellberg against Bristol City on Saturday, but it was a fine start for the Swede as he continues a strong campaign.

The selection did not make any major changes during the summer transfer period, but there were important changes. One big move saw former boss Rob Edwards put his faith in Sol Brynn as the new number one.

Edwards has been away, but Brynn has kept his place on the sidelines. It comes after a long journey to this point for the Middlesbrough-born shot-stopper, who has had spells on loan at Queen of the South, Swindon Town and Leyton Orient.

His contract already runs until 2028, but Brynn has now been rewarded with an extension. Boro have agreed new terms to keep him until the summer of 2030 in a popular and well-deserved move.

The emergence of Sol Brynn at Middlesbrough solves the long-term problem

Middlesbrough have had long-term problems with the goalkeeper position. Michael Carrick often had to drop and change his number one due to injuries.

Seny Dieng was signed as number one for the long term, but has not been able to maintain such a place. It has led to short-term solutions such as loan deals for Mark Travers, or a run in the team for Tom Glover.

But with Brynn, Boro finally seem to have someone who can be their permanent point of contact for the foreseeable future. He has made the transition to regular Championship football brilliantly, with an impressive presence in goal and a great ability to stop shots.

The 25-year-old’s performances deserve more clean sheets, but his value is not being overlooked. Importantly, Brynn still appears to have more development to do, so he will only get better over the course of his long-term contract on Teesside.

What Sol Brynn’s emergence could mean for other Middlesbrough goalkeepers

Brynn is now undoubtedly Middlesbrough’s strongest goalkeeper and that will bring about change.

The aforementioned Seny Dieng is widely expected to leave in 2026. Former club QPR were linked in the summer but a move failed to materialise, so it will be intriguing to see if their interest comes to the fore again.

Jon McLaughlin served as number two behind Brynn. He provides a safe and experienced pair of hands as a backup, but is not a long-term option at 38 years old.

It means that both goalkeepers could move next year. Brynn would likely face new competition for his place in the form of two new signings, but if he can maintain this season’s level there will be no reason to sign a ‘keeper to take his place.
