The NBA is investigating a report that clippers star Kawhi Leonard has reportedly signed a marketing agreement of $ 28 million to circumvent the salary limit.
“We are aware of this morning’s media report on the La Clippers and start an investigation,” NBA spokesperson Mike Bass De Post said in a statement.
The allegations came to light in a Wednesday delivery of the podcast “Pablo Torre finds Out”, which reported that an environmental start-up company was funded in San Francisco by an investment of $ 50 million from Clippers-owner Steve Ballmer-Old Aspiration.
But the deal was a “no-show job” that was designed to help the salary limit of the competition, according to the report from the podcast.
Torre said he spoke with seven former aspiration employees who worked in the financial department, who told him that the deal was seen as a way for the NBA franchise to bypass the limit.
“My reaction was,” What the F – K? “, A source told Torre. “I was told:” Oh, these are the most important contracts and the most important players you really should pay attention to. ” We have gone a litany of real, really top name contracts and then we also have a marketing agreement with Kawhi Leonard, an organic marketing sponsorship of $ 28 million with Kawhi.
The clippers have denied the accusations and released a statement to athletics repeats that position on Wednesday.
“Nor Mr Ballmer, nor the clippers, did the salary hood bypass or were concerned with any misconduct with regard to aspiration,” the explanation told the outlet. “Every opposite statement is demonstrably incorrect: the team ended his relationship with Aspiration years ago, during the 2022-23 season, when aspiration was in default about his obligations. Neither the clippers nor Mr Ballmer was aware of any incorrect activity by aspiration or his co-founder until the government had started his investigation.
“The team and Mr. Ballmer are ready to help the police in every possible way.”
The clippers had landed Leonard in 2019 when he signed a four -year -old deal, $ 141 million.
He then again signed with the clippers for a four-year-old deal in 2021 before he closed another three-year-old deal that will hold him in Los Angeles during the 2026-27 season.
The marketing agreement started during the first re -examination period, according to the report.
