Kansas head coach Bill Self was ejected during the first half of Tuesday’s 70-60 loss to Arizona State after expressing anger over a foul call against freshman Darryn Peterson.

With six minutes left in the first half, Peterson and Sun Devils guard Bryce Ford struggled at the baseline as Peterson tried to get off a screen. Peterson tried to run through Ford, who kept him from moving, but was whistled for the foul.

He himself crossed half court and argued with the call and received a first technical decision. He continued to berate officer Doug Sirmons, who gave him a second technical inspection. At the time of the elimination, the Jayhawks were off to a slow start, trailing the Sun Devils 23–16. By halftime, ASU’s lead grew to 20 points.

Officials themselves said not to tell him anything before he was sent away.

“They threw me out before they even said anything. That probably wasn’t a good call, but I got out of the box and he gave me a (technical) penalty, which is fine, but I didn’t do anything to earn a second (technically) in any way, but that’s those guys for you. He told me to get back in the box, and I didn’t get back there fast enough, so that’s on me.”

Kansas assistant Jacque Vaughn took over as head coach, but also received a technical foul with less than a minute left in the first half, giving the Jayhawks three technical fouls.

“I’m disappointed in myself that I wasn’t there with the boys to finish the game, but it was quite a spirited team tonight, but it didn’t cost us anything,” Self said. “What cost us was that we weren’t ready to play, and we’re not good enough. Our players aren’t talented enough to not be ready and energetic.”

It was a tough outing for the Jayhawks, who trailed all the way in Tempe. Kansas shot 28 percent from the field and turned the ball over 17 times – just two games after beating No. 7 Houston. Kansas cut the lead to two points, but that was as close as it got.

Peterson played a normal load of minutes, but shot three of 17 from the floor on his way to 15 points. The Jayhawks’ entire starting lineup combined for less than 30 percent shooting.

This was the third ejection of Self’s career. His last lockout was a loss to Texas Tech in 2024.
