NBA is expanding its global reach
The NBA continues its international growth, this time written in Australia. The Pelicans of New Orleans played two pre-season matches against Melbourne United and Southeast Melbourne Phoenix, which mark the very first series of the competition.
Since 2017, the NBL has visited the United States for the previous season matchups, with the aim of strengthening ties between the two competitions. That relationship took another step forward when the NBA agreed to send a team to the Gold Coast in March 2025. Just like earlier NBL x NBA meetings, the games were played under official NBA rules.
Australian roots are deeply
Australia has become a strong source of NBA talent over the years. Players such as Andrew Bogut, Patty Mills, Luc Longley and Aron Baynes have considerable consequences for the competition. Baynes, who won a championship with the San Antonio Spurs, joined NBA TV as a color commentator for the series next to Mills.
Pelicans make an impression
The Pelicans have dealt with things on the field. She defeated Melbourne United 107–97 and dominated the Phoenix 127–92. Zion Williamson soon became a favorite with fans and led to viral smile when local media players asked if they “would take a lead from Williamson.”
The star embraced the moment. “I know we are doing it here,” said Williamson. “But once we get on the field, both teams go to each other. When I go in the middle, I don’t expect anyone to leave the way.”
Williamson supported his words. In 16 minutes against United he achieved 15 points, five assists and two rebounds. He placed eight points against the Phoenix, nine rebounds, three assists, three steals and two blocks.
A promising future for Australia
After the competitions, the Pelicans praised the experience. “The game is so worldwide that you let teams play in other countries in other countries,” said coach Willie Green. “After this experience I think we will see more teams coming to Australia.”
Guard Jordan Poole agreed. “The interactions, good basketball … I only have positive things to say. It’s something we have to make routine.”
The Pelicans returned home to prepare for their next preview match on October 14 against the Houston Rockets in Birmingham, Alabama.
