Astronaut Nick Hague says ‘what a ride’ and says that capsule is ‘full of grins’
My colleague Richard Luscombe, Which covers the mission from Florida, has more of the first reaction we have heard of the returned astronauts:
“And splashdown. Crew-9 back on earth.
“What a ride. I see a capsule full of grines, ear to ear,” replied Nicholas Hague, the third American on board.
We will soon have Richard more.
Important events
NASA -Astronaut Nick Hague, grinning, emerged from the spacecraft and a medical examination is driven on board the repair ship.
While we are waiting for Barry ‘Butch’ Wilmore and Suni Williams, two American astronauts who spent much longer on the international space station than expected, it is worth considering all the reasons we look at a live stream of this return mission.
Yes, it’s a compelling human story. But we also witness a very choreographed day of political messages for SpaceX, and the CEO Elon Musk; For the Trump government, and for NASA itself, who occupies a somewhat precarious political position as a government agency in the new era of Trump-MUSK.
More from my colleague Michael Sainto about that:
“Smiling everywhere”, while we get the first images of crew-9 astronauts on earth.
The side hatch of the spacecraft has just been opened. We are still waiting for the view of the returned astronauts in it.
When the astronauts go out soon, it will be “the first breath of the crew of fresh air since they got in at the start of their ships last year,” notes SpaceX’s Kate Tice.
We will soon see that the four astronauts from the spacecraft will be accompanied and a short distance to where they receive medical checks.
Some extra living images of the dolphins that were seen that swim around the brought spacecraft while floating off the coast of Florida …
… joke: this is a dolphin illustration of the iconic 1980s/1990s the American designer Lisa Frank. (However, it has been a creepy image-perfect day.)
The Dragon Freedom and spacecraft has now been successfully lifted out of the water and placed in a “nest” on a repair ship, where it is moved somewhat and will also be rinsed to protect it against the corrosion of saltwater.
It is about 30 minutes since the Splashdown.
Here is the lifting in process:
Here is an image of an employee who helps to prepare the rigging on the just land capsule so that it can be lifted out of the water:
We are expected to see the returned astronauts Will soon leave the capsuleSandra Jones, a NASA Public Affairs Officer, notes while she tells NASA’s live feed.
The capsule is lifted on a “nest” on the repair ship and then the astronauts can leave.
To add to the perfect images that now come from NASA, dolphins swim around the floating capsule while the recovery team prepares to be hoisted on the repair ship.
“We have a cute pod dolphins,” adds a live commentator.
