On Wednesday, during a confrontation just outside Parliament, a heated argument broke out between the two leaders as Bittu entered the House. Rahul Gandhi called him a ‘traitor’ to which the BJP leader responded with a quip and called Gandhi a ‘enemy of the country” (enemy of the nation).
Gandhi attempted to speak after expressing solidarity with the suspended party MPs, most of whom were from Punjab. Seeing the protesting lawmakers, Bittu remarked, “They (suspended Congress MPs) are sitting here as if they have won a war.” As he began to climb the stairs, Gandhi said, “The point is, a traitor is walking past here. Look at his face. Look what he looks like.”
Prime Minister Modi reacted sharply to Gandhi’s comments, saying they reflected the Congress leader’s arrogance at his peak. He added that the comments were not only against Bittu but were an insult to the Sikh community and the gurus.
“What happened yesterday? The Yuvraj of Congress who did that poetic spirit (crooked mind), called an MP of this House a ‘traitor’. His arrogance is at its peak. He didn’t call anyone else who has left Congress a traitor. But he called the MP a traitor because he is a Sikh. This was an insult to the Sikhs, an insult to the gurus. This was an expression of the hatred against Sikhs in the Congress,” Prime Minister Modi said.
In his 1 hour and 35 minutes long speech, Prime Minister Modi further grilled the Opposition Leader and said Bittu was a member of the family who sacrificed himself for the country and asked, “Just because he changed his political ideology, did he become a traitor?”
“This is not a small word. How can the country tolerate calling a citizen a traitor? This is very unfortunate. Such people will sink the Congress,” he added.
