Rep. Nancy Mace, RS.C. introduced a motion to Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., About comments she made about Charlie Kirk, tried to add her house colleague to the growing list of people who have been professionally punished for their speech in the aftermath of killing the conservative commentator last week.
Omar’s office said on Tuesday that the measure was an example of the Republican hypocrisy on the concept of free speech.
“Congress woman Omar was one of the first to condemn the murder of Charlie Kirk. She explicitly expressed her sympathies and prayers to his wife and children. She condemned his murder and condemned routine political violence, regardless of political ideology,” said a spokesperson for Omar’s office in an explanation.
In one interview With Zeteo last week, Omar spoke memories of Kirk that she saw as the purifying of his openly intolerant Standing and borrowing unnecessary gullibility to his political intention. She also said that the news of his murder was ‘deadly’ and that her heart broke for his children.
“There are many people talking about him [Kirk] Just want a civil debate, “Omar told the Medhi Hasan van Zeteo. In those arguments, Omar said, a recognition of the well -documented views that Kirk up.
“Charlie was someone who once said that weapons save lives after a shooting at school,” she said. “Charlie was someone who was willing to debate and trivialize the death of George Floyd in the hands of the Minneapolis police.”
Kirk’s inheritance has been the subject of an enthusiastic debate in the days since he was killed. Kirk founded and led the right -wing organization Turn Point USA, which worked to mobilize support for what the Southern Poverty Law Center described As “a white dominated, male supremacist, Christian social order.”
Mace’s censorship resolution comes as at least tens People are fired or disciplined for comments they made after killing Kirk. That includes Matthew Dowdan analyst at MSNBC, and Karen Atiah, A Washington Post Opinion writer.
“It has been told that those who claim that they are for freedom of expression are those who punish and remain silent of those who exercise that right.”
Mace said that Omar Kirk’s murder had mocked the comments and earned the removal of her committee assignments. MACEs solution Repeatedly quotes one video That Omar was posted on X again, but the representative does not quote himself.
Her office did not immediately respond to the interception of the interception of comments.
In comments to reporters on Monday, President Donald Trump said he agreed that Omar had to be removed from her committees because of her comments about Kirk.
Omar’s office said that during the Zeteo interview she struggled with what she described as Kirk’s division, but never imply that he deserved to be shot or celebrated his death. “It is to say that those who claim that they are for free speech are those who are punishing and silent of those who exercise that right,” said Omar spokesperson in a statement.
Since she was chosen in 2018, Omar has had to deal with violent threats, which she has tackled in the Zeteo interview.
“You have people like Nancy Mace who constantly harass people she finds inferior and want them not to exist in this country or ever,” Omar said. “You have people like Trump, who encouraged violence against people like me. These people are full of shit and it is important for us to call them while we feel anger and sorrow.”
In recent years, Omar has already confronted with a handful of censorship resolutions and attacks by both Democrats and Republicans about its comments that criticize Israeli lobby and American imperialism. Omar was confronted last year with two censorship resolutions about one claim that she had a “history of anti -Semitism” And individual comments she made in a speech for Somali Americans.
In 2023, House Republicans Omar removed from her position in the Commission of the House Foreign Affairs about comments she criticized the Israel lobby. And in 2019 the house voted for a resolution that claimed to condemn anti -Semitism in response to other comments from Omar.
Omar’s office said that these punishments from the Gop showed a clear bias. “It is also remarkable that every Republican Censure resolution against members of the congress focuses on legislators of color.”
