Nancy Bird Walton’s former home sells for almost $10 million – realestate.com.au

The former Turramurra home of pioneering aviator the late Nancy Bird Walton has been sold to a Sydney family for almost $10 million.

Nancy was just 19 when she became Australia’s first female pilot, flying famous doctors to regional communities, earning her the nickname Angel of the Outback. Sydney’s second airport, due to open next year, is named after her and in 1997 she was named an Australian Living Treasure.

In her 60s and 70s, she lived in Wongola, a five-bedroom estate on 2,600 square meters of land in Boomerang St.

The historic home has been beautifully renovated by the current sellers.

The historic house has been renovated by Telstra senior executive David Burns and Edwina Burns, who enjoy breathing new life into old homes.

The couple purchased the home in 2021 for $7.875 million and it was put up for auction in September.

Officers say the new owners are a family from the city.

A month later the sale sign was posted and although agents Tim Fraser of Di Jones and Harriet France of Sotheby’s were not at liberty to comment on the sale, the 1927 house is believed to have sold close to the auction guide.

The agents did say that the new owners were an out-of-town family looking for a large home close to schools.

“The market is patchy and there is a lot more stock available, but well-presented properties are still popular,” said Fraser.
