The heroic deeds of Mychel Sanchez on Parx on Wednesday and the collective Op-Track performance of older Staatsmen John Velazquez, Javier Castellano, Mike Smith and Frankie Dettori emphasized the week of Racen and led the panel of racing opportunities to honor Jockey-SPEP.
The weekly honor recognizes Jockeys for important driving performance and who are members of the Jockeys’ Guild, the organization that represents more than 1050 active, retired and permanently disabled Jockeys in the US
A typical racing week for Mychel Sanchez comprises driving between Parx and Laurel Park. But last Wednesday was only typical because of driving on Parx. Sanchez was on board Dark Devil for trainer Silvio Ramirez in Race 7, a Mile Maiden Special Weight competition. Around the first turn, Sanchez heard Jockey Abner Adorno on board Sole Lute screaming when his rein broke and threw his mountain from the inside to the outdoor athlete.

“I had to do something, not just because it was, a good friend, husband and father, but I saw in his face how he was in trouble,” Sanchez said.
Halfway through the back stall, Sanchez led his mountain to the outdoor track and put him for Adorno’s to slow down the Reinless horse and at the same time turn the possible disaster in a scary situation. The stewards declared Sanchez’s Mount a non-starter for deployment purposes.
“I could not live by myself if I did not avoid (to help him), knowing that I could, and something would have happened to him and the horse,” Sanchez said.
Hall of Famers John Velazquez, 53, Mike Smith, 60, and Javier Castellano, 47, as well as the international superstar Frankie Dettori, 54, continue to prove that they are still at the top of their gradual gradual commitments with breeders’ cup implications. They will all have mounts this weekend in Belmont at The Big A, Keeneland or Santa Anita in Graded Stakes Action.
John Velazquez accompanied locked for Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher for a win in the GR. II Woodward and the Gr. II Cell lady on board Gun Song for trainer Mark Hennig.
