Mulliner celebrates another milestone in technology and craftsmanship.
Part of Bentley’s grand finale for its former flagship W12 powertrain, the Bentley Batur is a limited-edition coachbuilt model from Bentley’s legendary Mulliner bespoke division, and not only brandishes the most powerful version of Bentley’s twin-turbo W12, but also features some of the most ultra-luxurious details and finishes Mulliner has to offer. These include interior details finished in 18-karat gold, sustainably sourced leather and one of the most advanced lighting features in the entire automotive industry.
According to BentleyBatur’s custom animated welcome lamp is the “first lighting feature that can be personalized to the customer’s choice.” This gives owners of the ultra-rare Batur the choice to create their own personal, custom welcome light animations, which can be up to 11 seconds long. Animations are projected from each door to welcome the occupants into the car.
While the technology was originally introduced for the Batur, other Bentleys now enjoy the ultra-high-tech, luxurious welcome lamp animations. A recent Mulliner commission celebrating the Romanian Athenaeum Concert Hall, a cultural and architectural icon in the city of Bucharest, featured a stunning and intricate animation inspired by the embroidery design on the headrest and the details on the dashboard.
The system works using as many as 415,800 tiny mirrors, all housed in one small silicon chip. Measuring eight square millimeters, it is called a Digital Micromirror Device, and three colored light sources project into it through five lenses and two prisms. Then the light passes through another five lenses and beautiful, detailed animations are displayed on the ground. Combining futuristic high-tech solutions with the meticulous commitment to ultra-luxury and artisanal craftsmanship that Bentley Motors has been known for for more than a century, the new bespoke animated welcome lights, initially exclusive to the Batur, are an example of how Bentley is pushing a traditional approach to luxury into the future of the automotive industry.
