Your dream project car can turn like it’s on rails, but it also has to stop. And if you want the best, you may be faced with a tough choice between Brembo and Wilwood brakes, both of which are the best in the business.
Braking is much more than just enormous stopping power; it’s about fade resistance and pedal feel. Therefore, it is difficult to decide whether to bet on Brembo or Wilwood. Before we get into it, there is no right or wrong here. It’s all about choosing which brake flavor suits you best. Brembo’s reputation stems from its contribution to motorsport. Formula 1, MotoGP and GT races require the pinnacle of braking performance. That’s why they feature precision-cast monoblocks, advanced ceramic composite materials and thermal management that can withstand the high temperatures caused by the track. Brembo has built a reputation for developing massive brakes that are thermally stable and phenomenally consistent, which is why a majority of high-performance cars and motorcycles are equipped with them straight from the factory.
A Brembo braking system gives you a firm brake pedal feel, linear braking pressure and superior fade resistance. However, they are expensive, and their price and technology can feel excessive for street applications. They are also less modular compared to a Wilwood brake kit, which can lead to mounting issues, especially if you’re working in tight spaces. Think of Brembo as a powerful ecosystem where every part is designed to work flawlessly with everything else.
American grit
Wilwood brakes excel in modularity. Think of Wilwood as a tailor who tailors a suit to your specific needs. You may be able to configure any Wilwood brake rotor, caliper, brake pad and even bracket. And you could use a kit from the company for just about any project, whether it’s a road car, an autocross build, a drag spec, a restomod, a track toy or even an off-road rig. The modular approach to these brakes gives you multiple rotor sizes, brake pad connections and mounting brackets, all of which can be custom made to fit your car.
Wilwood kits provide fantastic braking performance both on the street and on the track, but there’s a catch. If you build your own custom brake kit, expect to spend more time during installation than with a pre-assembled Baer or a standardized Brembo brake kit. The real world
As for maintenance, high-end Brembo parts can be shockingly expensive to replace. If you warp a Brembo rotor, a replacement kit can run you anywhere from $1,600 to $2,600. Wilwood components are wonderfully cheap to replace in comparison, costing a quarter of the price of the Italian competition. However, the lack of a dust shield means you often have to rebuild your Wilwood brake calipers, especially if you spend your winters on the salted roads of the Midwest belt.
Brembo or Wilwood?
Choosing expensive Brembo brakes makes sense if you drive big, heavy and fast cars, or if you spend a lot of time racing on high-speed circuits. They are also a good choice if you are looking for plug-and-play components and long-term durability, even under harsh driving conditions. Wilwood brakes make sense if you are building a lightweight and highly customizable project car. It’s a good investment if you have a modest budget but don’t want to compromise on braking – and if you want a daily driver who can also spend his weekends on the track.
Brembo wins hands down when it comes to outright performance, but it comes with a high price tag, extra weight and expensive maintenance. Wilwood has cost advantages and flexibility, which is good for street performance and easy maintenance. Ultimately, both Brembo and Wilwood are great at stopping your car. The difference lies in the way they do it, the way they feel and the environment in which they excel.
