In our latest community article, FPL_Runpharm sheds light on the ‘grass is always greener’ mentality that can pervade Fantasy Football.
This is a true story. It happened to someone I know, and maybe it happened to you too. There won’t be a shortage of similar examples every week in the FPL community.
This FPL manager owned it Omar Alderete (£4.1m), planned for Bench Boost, then saw the yellow flag. He was thinking about switching to Nordi Mukiele (£4.0 million). Same price, same team – why not? However, he decided to wait for more news. When photos emerged of Alderete during training, he felt brilliant. “See? Patience pays off,” he told himself, proud that he didn’t waste a transfer like those “impatient” managers. Now he can use Bench Boost without wasting a transfer.
Game day had arrived. Alderete began. Sunderland kept a clean sheet. This manager celebrated his genius move until he checked the details. Alderete missed points for the defensive contribution (DefCon) by one difference. Shame, but fine. No bonus points. Fine.
But then he saw that Mukiele was getting DefCon. His face turned pale. Mukiele received all three bonus points. His jaw dropped: how did that happen? And finally the fatal blow: a goal. A win of 17 points for Mukiele, only six for Alderete.
His smile disappeared. The same patience he once prided himself on now felt like a mistake. He spiraled. Cursed his luck, cursed the luck of others. “They don’t deserve those points,” he muttered. “I should have just done the transfer, I should have known!” The gratitude he had a few moments ago, for the start of Alderete, the clean sheet, the successful Bench Boost… it all evaporated. He was no longer happy with what he had; he was angry about what someone else got.
And that’s basically life. We often start out satisfied, with our jobs, families, or simple victories, until we start comparing. Someone else makes more, looks happier, is luckier, and suddenly what we have feels smaller. Happiness doesn’t disappear because our reality changes; it disappears because our focus does.
So, maybe the next time you get your own clean slate (literally or figuratively), stop comparing. Celebrate your victory – because happiness isn’t about letting someone else’s score take away from the joy of yours.
