Morehouse College appoints a groundbreaking author Dr. Joy Angela Degruy as a visiting scholar


DEGRUY has a proponent of black male youth and their mental health in her research.


Morehouse College has a new professor on the campus – invested author and social work Professional Dr. Joy Angela Degruy.

The HBCU of the All-Men has selected DEGRUY as Provost’s Distingughed Visiting Scholar, According to a press release of 28 August.

Degruy will bring a wealth of knowledge in the campus, located in the Atlanta University Center. Known for her work from 2005, Post traumatic slave syndrome: America’s legacy of permanent injury and healingThe researcher focuses on the intersections of racism, trauma, violence and American chattel slavery.

The book, which describes how generation trauma influences the black community comes from slavery, also stands as a fundamental text in psychology and Africana studies. In Morehouse she will connect her work on the mental health of black male youth to help the academic discussion and research of the school.

She is also the maker of the African -American male adolescent respect scale, a source that is the unique challenges with which young black men are nowadays assessed.

“The work of Dr. Degruy has transformed our understanding of the intergenerational impact of slavery and racism and at the same time offers paths to healing and resilience,” said Dr. Kendrick BrownProvost and Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs at Morehouse. “Her appointment as Provost’s Distingughed Visiting Scholar reflects the dedication of Morehouse College to promote the stock market and dialogue that tackle the lived experiences of our communities.”

As the recipient of 2023 of the President’s Award of the American Psychological Association, Degruy will lead conversations about intergenerational trauma among black men and explore ways to move forward. She also speaks on behalf of Task Forces of recovery and worldwide forums against discrimination and racism.

As a visiting scholar, Degruy will promote conversations with Faculty, students and the AUC community.
