The following evening, Club Brugge hosted Atletico Madrid, with the two teams playing out a 3-3 draw, making for an exciting final at the Metropolitano Stadium next week.
Mignolet started for Club Brugge, but conceded within eight minutes after a handball from defender Joaquin Seys allowed Julian Alvarez to convert an early penalty.
Ademola Lookman gave Atletico a 2-0 lead just before half time when he turned in Alvarez’s corner, but Club Brugge were level before the hour mark.
Raphael Onyedika was alert to cross the ball into the penalty area to make it 2-1, before Nicolo Tresoldi finished at the near post to equalize.
Liverpool centre-back Joel Ordonez committed to Club Brugge
An own goal from Liverpool-linked defender Joel Ordonez put Atletico back in front and Diego Simeone’s side looked on course for a crucial away win.
But Christos Tzolis scored to make it 3-3 in the 89th minute and level the score before Club Brugge headed to Madrid for the decider.
It means that both Liverpool and Tottenham – who are in the last 16 in the same category – are no less confident about their opponents in the first knockout stages of this season’s Champions League.

And for Mignolet, it keeps hopes of a return to his old club alive, with the 37-year-old goalkeeper recently reclaiming the No. 1 job for Club Brugge after injury problems earlier in the season.
Mignolet left Liverpool for Club Brugge in an £8.2 million transfer in 2019, having spent six years at Anfield and making 204 appearances.
The Belgian recorded a clean sheet percentage of 31.86 percent in his time on Merseyside, which is the lowest of any of Liverpool’s regular starting goalkeepers in the Premier League era.
