The referees – 11 men and 11 women – went through the courses in Plymouth and Wolverhampton after qualifying through two training sessions.

The former, taught by Paul Whiting of Joola Plymouth TTC, is designed to support their upcoming 4-stars, whilst the latter was taught by International Umpire Brian Jackson of the Women’s British Clubs League and was designed to provide referees in support of events generally around the Midlands.

The referees who passed are: Mitchell Bellham, Marie-Claire Davies, Scott Davies, Holly Fauchon, Len Field, Paul Giles, Carol Giles, Kate Hughes, Elliott Hey, Tra Hoang, Pete Jamieson, Susan Laffey, Helen Lambert, Shreyansh Makhanasa, Lee McHugh, Marketa Myskova, Phil Pagett, Jeff Rigby, Dawn Sagoo, Tim Strutz, Dominique Williams, Lin Wu.

Meanwhile, Mohammad Sadek from Birmingham has achieved two qualifications, having passed his Level 2 (National Refereeing) exam and also his Level 1 Refereeing exam.

The Technical Officials Committee (TOC) have also been busy delivering an online ‘Referee and Assistant Referee’ training session and an OVR Touchpad training session will soon be taking place for our less experienced referees attending the World Championships and Senior Nationals. Both will be officiated by Tom Purcell, the 2012 men’s singles final referee in London.

Chris Newton, who is part of TOC, said: “This is part of our ongoing strategy to create a high-quality workforce of officials, safeguard the future of officiating in the sport and provide officials with a pathway to progress to the top if they wish.

“It is extremely pleasing to see an equal split of male and female referees qualifying through these latest courses.”
