Mexican Open denies cancellation due to violence in the country

Members of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), one of the most powerful and feared criminal organizations in Mexico, have set fire to businesses and set up burning blockades since El Mencho’s death.

The Mexican Open issued a statement saying that “the supposed cancellation of the event due to security concerns in Jalisco is false.”

It said: “The event will go ahead as planned and tournament activities will proceed as normal.

“We remain in coordination and constant communication with federal, state and municipal authorities, following established safety protocols.”

Britain’s Katie Boulter and Heather Watson will compete in the Merida Open in Mexico this week.

The event takes place in the state of Yucatan, which does not appear to have been significantly affected by the violence.

The WTA said there is an increased police presence and additional security measures in place during the tournament following the incidents in Jalisco, about 1,000km away.

“The safety of players, staff and spectators remains our top priority,” the women’s board told BBC Sport.

“The tournament is proceeding as planned and there have been no reports of incidents in the region.”

Boulter will play against Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia on Monday and Watson will face Spaniard Jessica Bouzas Maneiro on Tuesday.
