When Sunday started, the New York Mets occupied a play -off position in the National League, something they had done since 5 April, literally almost the entire season. When Sunday ended, they no longer held one of those places.
Thanks to their 3-2 loss for the Washington Nationals, along with the 1-0 of the Cincinnati Reds about the Chicago Cubs, the two teams are now bound for the last wildcard spot in the National League. But with the Reds that the Tiebreaker owns in that Playoff race, this means that the Reds have jumped for the Mets.
After having occupied a play -off place for almost the entire season, the Mets no longer control their own path to the play -offs. They should not only start winning more games. They need help.
An incredible second half of melting for the Mets
It is not only that the Mets are in a Playoff position most of the season, it is that they have been comfortable in a play -off position most of the season.
Go back to July 27 when the Mets had just won their seventh game in a row to improve to 62-44. They were 18 games upstairs .500, had the third best record in the National League and were on top of the NL East classification. They were six games free from the non-Playoff teams and fought for a division rone.
They were also extremely active in the trade deadline, got outfielder Cedric Mullins from the Baltimore Orioles and relief pitchers Ryan Helsley (St. Louis Cardinals) and Tylor Rogers (San Francisco Giants).
Since then, almost everything has gone wrong.
All their acquisitions from the Big Trade Deadline are seriously flopped and played an important role in the second half of the smelting, while the general record of the team was only 18-32 in the 50 games about that piece.
It is a complete 180 from the second half of the 2024 season when the Mets were one of the most popular teams in baseball to grab an unexpected play -off place.
The METS invested huge money in this schedule, including the $ 750 million contract for Juan Soto. Soto played at a legitimate MVP level this season and has the chance to be a rare 40-40 player (40 home runs, 40 stolen bases) in the history of MLB. But everything else went terribly wrong. If they actually continue this and miss the play-offs, this might be the kind of performance of the second half that people cost their work.
