Jonah Tong gets another chance.
The 22-year-old Mets-Starter, who has not included three outs in his most recent outing, will get the ball on Thursday for the serial final against the Padres in Citi Field.
While the Mets condensing their rotation – Clay Holmes and Sean Manaea worked well on Tuesday – Tong is still part of the group.
“We are not going to respond exaggerated after one inning, one outing,” said Carlos Mendoza manager before the 8-3 victory. “We know that the stuff is there and his ability to bounce back. What we have seen in the small competitions and what we have seen here, we feel good with him on Thursday.”
This season, Tong sailed by the minors and played decently in his first two Major League opportunities before Friday, when he held six points on four hits and three walks while he lasted two-thirds of a collection in a loss for the Rangers.
The young Righty was emotional after the game and received a positive word from just about everyone.
‘With all three of these guys [including Nolan McLean and Brandon Sproat]I think one of the reasons why we felt comfortable to make the decisions we made to promote them was that we had the feeling that they were able to do adversity, and they can bounce back, “said President of Baseball Operations David Stearns.” It was clear that Jonah was who was him was experienced for him.
“But I also think it tells that almost every man in our pitching was a story after the game had a story to tell Jonah about something similar that happened to them at some point in their career. … I don’t necessarily want to exaggerate an outing. I think a pitch here or a lot could have changed that inning.”
Tongue that stays in the Majors coincides with Kodai Senga that stays in the minors.
At the end of this week, Senga will make a second start with Triple-A Syracuse, “and then we will go from there,” said Mendoza.
Senga could only be called up on Saturday.
Stearns on Mendoza: “I think Mendi did very well. I think he has been a positive leader, a consistent leader, did what he can go to get our group going, and I think he will continue to do that.”
Luis Torrens (right-wing forearmcontusion) was on Tuesday evening in the line-up for a triple-a-rehabilitation assignment at the Syracuse Mets. He played seven innings behind the record and hit 0-out-4 and spread twice.
