Asia Cup 2025: Andy Pycroft continues to continue as a match referee despite PCB Row

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is in a difficult place with the participation of the national team on the current Asia cup 2025. On the eve of their crucial must-win collision against the United Arab Emirates (VAE), the future of Pakistan in the tournament is uncertain. The controversy started from PCB’s requirement to remove the ICC competition referee Andy Pycroft after a handshak row with India, a request that the International Cricket Council (ICC) was officially rejected.

During the defeat of Pakistan against India on September 14, the Indian players refused usual handshakes at the Worp and after the game. After this, Captain Salman Ali Agha van Pakistan won the presentation against protest after the game and Pycroft accused of façade cladding with India by instructing that handshakes were superfluous. The PCB escalated the problem and insisted on the removal of Pycroft from the rest of the Asia Cup, warning for a potential withdrawal if the question was ignored. However, the ICC refused to accept the requirements of the PCB.

PCB spokesperson Amir Mir confirmed that a final decision had not yet been made

On Tuesday, PCB canceled their planned press conference, but still continued with the planned training session at the ICC Academy Ground. The session overlaps with the nets of India. PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi, who also holds a ministerial position in the Pakistani government, flew to Islamabad earlier in the day to consult civil servants about the impasse. Sources suggest that his discussions with government representatives revolved around the diplomatic consequences of a possible withdrawal and how they can make national pride with cricket obligations.

In the meantime, a cricbuzz report indicated a possible intervention of the cricket boards of the VAE and Oman, who mediated to make tensions harmless. Interestingly, a compromise seems to be on the table with Pycroft can be removed from officializing the Pakistan-Uae match on Wednesday, with Richie Richardson who steps in, although Pycroft would remain on the tournament panel. PCB spokesperson Amir Mir confirmed that a final decision had not yet been made.

“The Pakistan Cricket Board has not yet made a definitive decision about the Asia Cup. Consultation is underway in this context and a definitive decision will be made tomorrow. The decision will be made to keep the importance of Pakistan in mind,” said Amir Mir.
