Just a quick note on clarity to counter a message spreading through social media, regarding Meta allegedly wanting to start using your private DMs for AI training.
Yes, as you might expect, that’s not true.
In October, Meta has announced an upcoming privacy policy updatewhich comes into effect on December 16 and focuses specifically on using your Meta AI interactions for comprehensive data insight.
That includes some of your chat data, but as Meta (repeatedly) clarified in his announcement:
“We will soon use your interactions with Meta AI to personalize the content and ads you see, including things like messages and reels.”
So, as Meta says, the extended policy will only cover your interactions with Meta AI, not your personal chats.
Yet some have wrongly (or not) assumed that this means all your DMs, in Messenger, WhatsApp, IG, will be open to Meta before mine.
Over the weekend, a video gained popularity in which a creator claims that as part of the update, Meta will indeed scan all your private DMs across all its apps to aid in its AI training.
But just to confirm, this is not correct.
This is what a Meta spokesperson said Candy:
“The update mentioned in the viral rumor is not about DMs at all, but about how we will use people’s interactions with our AI features to further personalize their experience. We do not use the content of your private messages with friends and family to train our AIs unless you or someone in the chat chooses to share those messages with our AIs. This is also not new and is not part of this December 16 privacy policy update.”
So if you see this message being forwarded about people being afraid of Meta’s December 16th privacy policy update opening up your DMs to Meta’s AI bots, no, that’s not correct. It is best not to forward that or reinforce it further.
Some people hate Zuck and Co. and will take the opportunity to kick them, some people no longer trust Meta after previous data exposure, and some are paranoid about the misuse of their data.
Whatever the reason, this change will not affect your private chats. Unless you invoke Meta AI in chat, the system will access the relevant information for AI training.
So if you want to keep your chats super private, don’t ask Meta AI for input.
