Connor McDavid has tackled its contract status On Wednesday during the Olympic Orientation Camp in Calgary, member of Sam Reinhart and Sidney Crosby in meeting the media. His comments came shortly after Ryan Rishaug of TSN reported that there was “no back and forth with dollars and conditions” between the Edmonton Oilers and the McDavid camp, led by Agent Judd Moldaver of Wassernman.
McDavid confirmed that report and said that his focus will remain firm on winning in Edmonton.
“I intend to win in Edmonton,” said McDavid. “That’s my only focus.”
Although the discussions about his next contract are underway, the captain of the oilers made it clear that there is no hurry to make a decision. He said that all options are on the table, or that means that closing an extension before the season starts or wait until later in the year. His priority, apart from helping team Canada that follows Olympic gold, is to ensure that the oilers are fully prepared for a new Stanley Cup run.
When the contract interviews could be distracted, McDavid said it was his goal for them not to be, but seemed reasonably relaxed, and hinted that it will not be.
Fans, as expected, quickly weighed on social media. Some external markets speculated that his open comments can indicate a willingness to explore other opportunities, while many oilers of oilers saw his comments as reassurance that an extension is inevitable and will probably rather rather than come later.
For now, McDavid seems satisfied to have the process play, regardless of how fast (or not so quickly) that happens.
