Cantrell was once celebrated as the first black female mayor of the city.
On August 15, Mayor of New Orleans Latoya Cantrell wrote unwanted history as the first sitting mayor in the 300th anniversary of the city to be confronted in office. Federal prosecutors accuse her of conspiracy for years to hide an affair with her bodyguard and to have accused her of conspiracy, fraud and obstruction.
According to CNNCantrell, who is planned to leave the office In about five months because of term limits, the first black female mayor of the city was once celebrated, but is now held by federal prosecutors as the last example of corruption in New Orleans.
“Public corruption has paralyzed us for years,” said American lawyer Michael Simpson in a statement that refers to the history of the city of civil servants accused of corruption. “And this is extremely important.”
The alleged paramour of Cantrell, Jeffery Vappie, is himself accused of wire fraud and making false statements, charges that he is not guilty of.
Although the couple maintained that their relationship was strictly professional, the indictment sketches a picture of the two as constructing a “personal and intimate” relationship, using WhatsApp to communicate without being detected and removing the messages later.
According to Simpson, Vappie and Cantrell used the message platform to exchange more than 15,000 messages, including attempts to bother a citizen, remove evidence, to make false explanations to FBI agents, “and ultimately to commit perjury for a federal large jury.”
Vappie and Cantrell are accused of issuing $ 70,000 in tax money to facilitate Vappie’s Various Rendez -Vous with the mayor, of which Simpson claims that it was greatly viewed by Cantrell per WhatsApp reports, including one of September 2022 that read: “The times when we really (travel) is what me is the most bild.”
Despite the allegations against her, Cantrell and her political allies argued that the allegations against her, at least partly, are due to her gender and race, a claim that Simpson made in his comments.
“It is not relevant that it is romance or that it is feminine,” Simpson told reporters, who continued that it is “an incredible betrayal of the trust of people in their own government.”
Cantrell, a democratic mayor, has difficulty retaining power during her second term, and survived a recall voice in 2022 amidst the fight with city councilors.
According to Wdsudifferent remarkable individuals responded to the indictment of CantrellIncluding the city of New Orleans and various municipal councilors in New Orleans.
“The city of New Orleans is aware of today’s indictment against Mayor Cantrell. The mayor of the mayor, Eddie Castaing, recently received the information and the document is thoroughly assessed. Until his assessment has been completed, the city will not comment on this issue,” said the city of New Orleans in a statement.
“Everyone is supposed to be innocent under the law. Mayor Cantrell deserves that suspicion. This will unfortunately be sensational because it concerns the mayor and the activities of the city will further hinder. We must let the facts play and not rush to judge,” said the New Orleans city council, Joe Giarusso.
“The announcement today reminds us of the need to let the legal system work in an honest, timely way and without taking into account politics or preference. I pray for mayor Cantrell, her family, and all the new orleanians. These are critical times for our city to come back on the track and a challenge to make us work in the challenge and a challenge of the situation,” Oliver Thomas.
