Houston – Round 1 goes to the Yankees.
There are still 11 rounds to go in this heavyweight fight, but the Yankees started so well as they could have had Tuesday evening.
Max Fried provided a bait-like effort with seven strong innings and received some knockout bumps from Trent Grisham (Grand Slam) and Jazz Chishholm Jr. (two home runs) to send the Yankees to a 7-1 win over the Astros in Daikin Park.
The victory began a crucial 12-game stretch against four fellow playoff kans-the series followed by that against the Blue Jays, Tigers and Red Sox-in style such as the Yankees (77-61) remained 2 ¹/₂ games back of the Beste Lead Division Straw Pass with the best of the best.
“These are the [teams] We are probably going to play in the play -offs and this is what we have to do, “said Chisholm.” We have to go outside and dominate, early, often and consistent. ”
The Yankees have won eight of their last nine games, and while seven of those victories came to two of the worst teams in the competition, with the Astros (76-63) in the series opener a step in the weight class.
“It was just a really good team win,” said Fried, who was nauseous but was still able to limit the Astros in seven innings while playing his position incredibly well in the field. “I was happy that I could eat some innings and keep some runs off the board. We wanted to come in tonight and start the series well.”
Fried, who struggled for a large part of July and August, seemed more to his first half for the third consecutive start in another encouraging sign. After placing an ERA of 6.80 over an eight-start piece until August 16, the left-handed person gave only two points over 20 innings in his last three starts.
Astros Lefty Framber Valdez came in the night with just one home run to a left -handed batter the entire season, but both Chishholm and Grisham brought him deeply over five innings.
Grisham again delivered the big swing, drilling a Grand Slam in the fifth inning to turn it into a 6-0 match. It marked Grisham’s second Grand Slam in his last four-match-nadat it had hit Chicago on Friday to open a one-run match and third of the season. It also marked his 29th Thuis Run in what has become a breakout year, and something, for the running free agent.
“I just spoke to myself on the deck, knowing that it would be a big situation,” said Grisham. “Getting really enthusiastic about that, being really calm and being really focused. Then looking for a throw that I can handle.”
Chisholm had made the Yankees forward early by crushing a two-run shot from Valdez in the second inning. He added insurance in the eighth inning and smoked a solo shot from another Lefty, Steven Okert, to extend the Yankees lead to 7-1. It marked the sixth home run of Chisholm in his last nine games, making him closer to the 30-30 club with 28 home runs and 26 steals.
“My whole career I always thought I could be better than 30-30 every time I stayed healthy,” said Chisholm. “Although I didn’t really stay healthy this year, I still show that I can get there. So for me it is a bit sick.”
Fried took care of the rest, thanks in part to his smooth field parties on a few bunts that held rallies.
The first two Astros reached the bottom of the third when Jeremy Peña tried to make a sacrifice. But it went straight to Fried, who went to third place to nail the leader. Two foundations of Carlos Correa and Jose Altuve later, Fried was undamaged from the inning.
“It helps to win ball games, and if I can do something to be the ninth defender there is, it will certainly help myself and the team,” Fried said.
Then, in the seventh inning of a 6-1 match, after each of the first two batters reached, Fried made a sliding grip on the bump of César Salazar and first shot to double game. Two throws later Fried was out of the jam again and his outing was complete.
“He is one of my favorites,” said Grisham. ‘I have to look at Manny [Machado] Take it for a long time, but I like to look at the convenience of the road [Fried] Get with certain balls and how he has a cannon and just let it eat. “
