The Dallas Mavericks have announced they are waiving guard Tyus Jones, NBA insider Marc Stein reported on Saturday. The move opens up a roster spot and allows Jones to join a team contending for the playoffs before Sunday’s buyout deadline.
Jones, 29, was acquired by Dallas on Feb. 5 in a three-team trade involving the Washington Wizards after a brief stint with the Charlotte Hornets. He had previously signed with the Orlando Magic in July 2025.
This season, Jones played in seven games for the Mavericks, averaging 3.6 points, 1.3 assists and 15.9 minutes per game while shooting 40.7% from the field.
Over his 11-year NBA career, Jones has played 737 games with 228 starts, averaging 7.4 points, 4.3 assists and 1.9 rebounds per game. He has maintained a career shooting percentage of 44.2% overall and 37.2% from three-point range.
The Mavericks are exploring whether guard Ryan Nembhard can be converted to a standard contract with the open roster spot created by Jones’ release. Management is also monitoring Khris Middleton’s status ahead of Sunday’s 11:59 PM deadline.
Jones’ release ensures he remains eligible for the playoffs with his next team. The veteran point guard offers experience in floor spacing and ball handling that a postseason contender could benefit from.
Dallas enters the latter part of the 2025-26 season with a 21-38 record and sits 12th in the Western Conference and out of the playoffs.
