Mauricio Pochettino has emerged as a potential candidate to replace Ruben Amorim and the Argentine has been backed by a key figure at Old Trafford, a new report has revealed.

INEOS has run out of patience

INEOS’ response to Amorim’s war of words in the aftermath of the 1-1 draw with Leeds United on Sunday afternoon was as decisive as it was deadly.

Less than 24 hours after Portugal coach criticized Jason Wilcox in the media, United’s sporting director sacked him along with CEO Omar Berrada at a meeting in Carrington.

However, the Elland Road outburst was not the deciding factor behind Amorim’s departure.

In reality, United’s hierarchy had already decided to end his tumultuous tenure 48 hours earlier, following a heated one-on-one between Wilcox and Amorim, in which the coach angrily rejected calls to change his favored 3-4-2-1 system.

INEOS, managed by Christopher Vivell – the increasingly influential recruitment director – wanted United’s approach to be less predictable, with more attacking intent. And there was optimism after the Boxing Day triumph against Newcastle, when United surprised the Magpies by slotting into a back four.

However, these feelings disappeared when Amorim returned to his three-man defense against bottom-placed Wolves just four days later, and the abysmal performance that followed.

It was this 1-1 draw, and not the one against Leeds, that sealed his fate – a decision fully supported by Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

Ratcliffe’s favorite option

Under-18 coach Darren Fletcher will take charge of the senior side against Burnley tomorrow evening.

But a permanent caretaker, likely Ole Gunnar Solsjkaer, will then take charge until the end of the season before a long-term replacement for Amorim is found before the summer.

There will be an intense debate, both inside and outside the club, over who is the best candidate for the role, with early signs pointing towards Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner.

However, ESPN reports that Pochettino, currently manager of the United States Men’s National Team (USMNT), is also being considered.

And TEAMtalk reporter Rudy Galetti reveals that the 52-year-old coach, who enjoyed previous spells at Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea and Paris-Saint Germain, is Ratcliffe’s “clear favourite” to get the hotseat at the Theater of Dreams.

The World Cup – which is being hosted by the United States this summer and is Pochettino’s immediate priority – is a complicating factor, which Galetti says is the reason “other profiles are being evaluated”.

But the report concludes that Ratcliffe “will not have the final say” – that the responsibility will lie with Wilcox, although it is notable who hired the sporting director and pays his salary each month.
