The U.S. women’s national team will receive plenty of excitement Thursday in its home game against Portugal at Subaru Park, but the absence of star player Trinity Rodman has certainly dampened the mood in camp.
Rodman, who was originally included in Emma Hayes’ October squad, was forced to withdraw after suffering an MCL sprain at her club Washington Spirit. The talented winger missed six months of international opportunities due to persistent back injuries, and last played for the USWNT in April.
Rodman has played 47 games for the USWNT so far, scoring 11 goals and adding nine assists. She has won six trophies with the program, including winning a gold medal at the 2024 Summer Olympics.
NWSL title winner Rodman’s versatility and creativity provide a big spark for the USWNT offense whenever she is on the court. However, her recent absence continues to be a frustrating year for the California native, now opening the door for others to fill her spot.
Although Hayes is “disappointed” and absolutely disappointed that Rodman will have to wait, she hopes to see the 23-year-old back on the field for club and country this year.
“While she understands that these setbacks happen, she is just as disappointed because she wanted to be here so badly,” Hayes said at a news conference Wednesday. “Luckily it’s not too far, and I hope she’s back in the playoffs and she’ll be back for the next camp.”
The USWNT will take on Portugal twice over the next four days before concluding a three-match stretch against New Zealand in Kansas City on October 29.
