This afternoon it was announced that the Calgary Flames have sent Matvei Gridin to the AHL to play with the Calgary Wranglers. This roster move was made to activate Jonathan Huberdeau from injured reserve. Huberdeau suffered an injury during a preseason game against the Vancouver Canucks that kept him out for the first five games of the season.
What does this mean for the Calgary Flames?
After a very solid preseason, Gridin made the Flames opening night roster out of camp. In his first NHL game, Gridin scored his first goal against the Edmonton Oilers. He could play three more games and be pointless in each one. Gridin was a healthy scratch in the most recent game against the Utah Mammoth, prompting the idea that he would be sent down upon Huberdeau’s arrival.
Gridin spent most of his time playing on the first line with Nazem Kadri and Matt Coronato. He also lined up quite a bit with Morgan Frost. With Huberdeau coming off injured reserve, he will likely fill the void with Gridin being sent down. As expected, during the line rushes this morning we saw Huberdeau with Kadri and Joel Farabee on the front row.
Huberdeau scored 28 goals and 62 points in 81 games last year, which was a nice step in the right direction. Now that Huberdeau is healthy, he will look to continue his best season as a Flame. As for Gridin, time in the AHL will help grow his game at the professional level. Expect him to be an offensive weapon for the Wranglers as the season progresses. There’s also a good chance we see Gridin with the Flames again at some point this season.
