Both Marte and Steer had three hits, including a Homer, and drove in four points. Time and again, their run production Cincinnati helped to respond to constant pressure exerted by the Pirates attack. Pittsburgh had 21 basic runners over nine innings.
The Milwaukee Bewers today defeated the New York Mets, 7-6. That keeps the Games-Behindmarge in the division at the age of 12, because the Brewers may never lose again. Today’s victory was their ninth in a row. On the other hand, the Mets have lost seven in a row and nine of their last 10. The loss drops their lead over the Reds for the third and last wildcard location to just one and a half games – the closest to Reds have been for a while. The next six games at home will be important (more below), but with the rankings as they are currently, every game is important.
The violation
Cincinnati’s very impressive team Hitting Line Score: 14-out-40 (.350), 6 walks received, 10 strikeouts and 8 points. With runners in score position, Reds-stroke people were 5-out-13 (.385).
Cincinnati took the first lead of the competition in the first of the third. Ke’bryan Hayes doubled with one out. Gavin Lux ran out later. Elly de la Cruz lit someone to directly that Hayes scored for a 1-0 Reds lead. Miguel Andujar followed by crushing a Mike Burrows High Slider, from the bat at 109 MPH, in the left field stands for a rare (recently) Reds Home Run and a 4-0 lead. It was even the first Reds Thuis Run in their last nine games in PNC Park.
In a Tie game, De la Cruz Pittsburgh -Reliever johan Ramirez greeted with a single to lead the top of the sixth. Andujar followed with a single that sent De la Cruz to third place. The struggles of Austin Hays continued, while he came out for the first time for the third time. Marte, however, picked him up, with a basic rule double over the left field player Tommy Pham’s head on the left. Marte’s celebrated double in the last two games, De la Cruz scored, sent Andujar to third place and put the Reds back, 5-4. Spencer Steer then doubled from the wall in the right-hand center to score Andujar and Marte to turn it into 7-4 red.
In the seventh, still confronted with Ramirez, TJ Friedl drew a lead -off Walk and went to second place in a wild throw. Friedl advanced Lux’s grounder on the right to third place. De la Cruz took a walk and led Pittsburgh manager Don Kelly Righthander Dauri Moreta, the former Red, to be discussed to tackle Andujar. He turned out to swing and the collection ended on a Hays groundout.
In the eighth baseed Marte and steer with his 14th Homer of the Year to Left-Center to make it 9-5 Reds. After Pittsburgh closed the deficit to one point in the bottom of the eighth, Righty Cam Sanders arrived to pitch the ninth. Andujar walked and Hays ran a single over short stop with one. Marte then launched one over the fence in midfield at 427 feet distance to make the 12-8 red. The following two batters, Steer and Jose Trevino, Pootged Infield Hits. A walk to Hayes then loaded the bases. Righty Isaac Matson then illuminated Sanders to be confronted with Friedl, who took a walk to be forced in the Run number 13. He was the seventh straight runner to reach. McLain hit a sacrifice to bring the score to 14-8.
In the past two games, Marte has four Doubles, a home run (his eighth) and five RBI. He has raised his stroke average to .287 and his ops to .837 – both are the best in the team. It is probably time to get him somewhere in the top five of the carpet.
The pitching
The pitching line of the Reds team in the box score: 9 innings, 16 hits, 5 walks, 8 strikeouts and 6 earned points (2 undeserved).
Starter Zack Littell eliminated the first four batters of the game, but was in a jam after two light contact pirate hits, and a field choice on a ground ball in the middle of the second Honkman Lux and Shortstop de la Cruz, resulting in no outs. That loaded the bases with pirates in the second inning with one. But Littell spread the following two batters to end the threat.
The fourth inning was difficult, because Littell allowed three points on four HITS three at 97.7 MPH or more, so that the lead of the Reds was cut to 4-3 at that time. In the fifth, two of the first three pirates reached a single and double respectively, so that the go-ahead run was placed in a score position with one out. A Jack Suwinski grounder to score the draw, and manager Terry Francona removed Littell after 4 2/3 innings in favor of Scott Barlow. Barlow smashed Jared Triolo who hurled with the Go-Ahead Run in third place to end the inning and hold the score. The pitch series to Triolo was seven consecutive slider.
After his teammates scored three points in the first half of the sixth to take a 7-4 lead, Barlow Back-to-Back Pittsburgh singles allowed to start the lower half of the inning. Francona called on Sam Moll to face Batting Spencer Horwitz, who beats. Tommy Pham then hit an end-of-end doubles.
After a walk to Bryan Reynolds and a strikeout from an Unancd Cruz in the seventh, Moll was removed for Rechtshander Luis Mey. After recording an out on a grounder, Mey walked three consecutive Pittsburgh -strokers to force in the fifth Pittsburgh -Run. Mey – who only threw five strikes in 19 throws – was replaced by Graham Ashcraft. He eliminated Isiah Kiner-Falefa on a fly-out to end the inning and let the bases full.
The Pirates set up their first two eighth inning runners via a double and single against Ashcraft. After a fly-out, Cruz set a hit on the right to bring Pittsburgh within 9-6. A walk to Nick Gonzales then loaded the bases. Suwinski then hit a lining to Matt McLain, who had arrived for defensive purposes. He caught the shot and then threw the second to try to double the runner there, but the ball went over the La Cruz and in the left field. Two pirate runners scored on the error to make it 9-8. Ashcraft recovered to eliminate Triolo with the draw in second place to end the inning.
The thoughts of a fan
It is probably wrong to mention the current Reds play -Off Hoop as a pennant race, because it is clear that Milwaukee or Chicago will win the National League Central Division. So one of those two teams will win that specific ‘pennant’. Milwaukee is 12 ahead of the Reds with 43 games on the Cincinnati schedule.
The coming week will be interesting and challenging. The Reds start with a six-game homestide: three against the Phillies (who won seven of nine) and three against Milwaukee-De first place teams in the NL East and Central Divisions, respectful.
The Reds are 11-41 in competitions this season when they score three or less points, and 51-16 when they score four or more. There is really no clearer indication of what this team should do to win. As we mentioned in this room last week, a Reds -hitter has to switch to a higher production equipment for this team to have a chance. They are on average 4.45 runs per game, that’s why they are above .500. But we have seen a few stripes of more than a day or two in which the bats of this team stand still. Hopefully Andujar is the piece that is missing. Or maybe Marte experiences a bat outbreak that will bring him to a higher layer of production.
The starting pitching is from top class, but the auxiliary staff after Emilio Pagan, Tony Santillan and Barlow is shaky, as we saw today. Five Pirates -stroke people went for walks, all against the auxiliary staff. A team that tries to make the play -offs cannot bring Mey to important places, and I said the same thing about Ashcraft.
But nobody in Louisville really is ready to step in. When Greene comes back to the rotation, it seems that Nick Martinez or Chase Burns will go to the bullpen. When Nick Lodolo returns, the other seems to make that movement.
