The Italian made a cryptic complaint during his post-match press conference following the Blues’ 2-0 win over Everton at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
“The way the players want to learn is fantastic and this is why I praise them, because with so many problems they are doing very well after a complicated week,” Maresca said.
“Since I joined the club, the last 48 hours have been the worst because a lot of people didn’t support us.”
Asked to explain what he meant, he replied: “The worst 48 hours since I joined the club because people didn’t support me and the team.”
Maresca did not point fingers at anyone within the club and told reporters he was talking about people “in general”. When asked if it was aimed at the fans or the media, he clarified: “I love the fans and we are very happy with the fans.”
The comments inevitably came up during Monday’s press conference ahead of Chelsea’s League Cup quarter-final against Cardiff City, but Maresca had no more to say on the matter.
“I’ve already talked about that,” he said. “I have nothing to add. Cardiff tomorrow please.”
“I have already spoken about it and I was very clear. Nothing more than that. My focus is on tomorrow’s match and reaching the semi-finals.”
“I said after the match that I love the Chelsea supporters. They deserve the best.”
Maresca reiterated his stance as more questions arose about his unexpected rant.
“I speak Italian very well, my language, Spanish, French and English. I think I was clear with what I said,” he added.
“If I want to say something, I am very clear. It’s over. I said what I said after the match. It’s over.”
