Will Liverpool regret missing Marc Guehi? (Photo by Ryan Pierse/Getty Images)
As reported by BBC Sports and others, Guehi’s late summer move to Liverpool fell through, although as things stand he is still a free agent next summer.
However, McAteer is concerned that Liverpool’s recent misstep could damage their chances of signing Guehi ahead of other big clubs.
Arne Slot’s side may have won the Premier League title last season, but their recent results and performances have been poor, and there is no guarantee they will even qualify for the Champions League again next season.
Liverpool may have missed their chance with Marc Guehi
If next year does end up being a season outside Europe’s top club competition, McAteer suspects it could hurt LFC’s chances as Real Madrid and Bayern Munich will certainly also be looking at Guehi due to the fact he will be available on a free transfer.
Speaking to Ace Odds, as quoted by the Liverpool echoMcAteer said: “As a free agent you involve everyone in the conversation. “It brings in Bayern Munich, it brings in Real Madrid, Barcelona and other clubs too.
“If Liverpool drop out there is no guarantee they will qualify for the Champions League and that could be something Guehi wants if he moves in as a free agent.”
Liverpool continues to have confidence in Marc Guehi
Our latest information remains that Liverpool are still confident of signing Guehi once his contract expires.
Things can change of course, but you can imagine the Merseyside giants have put a lot of work into this deal having come so close to closing it in the summer.

With Ibrahima Konate another player nearing the end of his contract next summer, it is certainly crucial for Liverpool to bring in a top-class centre-back like Guehi to replace him if he leaves.
As Indy Kaila reported Caught offside Liverpool could also sell Konate yesterday and sign Guehi in January if the French centre-back does not accept their latest contract offer.
