Maple Leafs place Brandon Carlo on IR retroactive to November 13 and draft Jacob Quillan

Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Brandon Carlo has been placed on injured reserve retroactive to Nov. 13, the team announced Monday.

Maple Leafs D Brandon Carlo has been placed on injured reserve retroactive to November 13, 2025. F Jacob Quillan has been recalled from the Toronto Marlies (AHL).

Jacob Quillan has been called up from the AHL’s Toronto Marlies.

Carlo was ruled out of Saturday’s game against the Chicago Blackhawks with a lower-body injury after not participating in Friday’s practice due to maintenance. It is unclear at the time of this filing when Carlo suffered the injury.

Toronto is already without Chris Tanev, who remains on injured reserve indefinitely. Auston Matthews and Scott Laughton are also on injured reserve and the Maple Leafs’ depth is being tested amid a five-game losing streak in November.
Troy Stecher was cleared off waivers by the Edmonton Oilers on November 15 and joined the team on the road. Stecher is a likely option to join the Maple Leafs defensive corps ahead of Tuesday’s game against the St. Louis Blues as a mobile right-handed option who offers a different look.

Quillan scored two goals and 14 points in 14 games with the Marlies this season. The 23-year-old played one game for the Maple Leafs last season and was able to fill a bottom-six role after an impressive training camp.

Carlo had two assists in 18 games for the Maple Leafs this season. The 28-year-old got off to a slow start compared to his own standards and struggled to build on the continuity developed with Morgan Rielly over the past year. Toronto will have to adjust without Tanev and Carlo, allowing the second-most goals in the NHL ahead of Monday’s games.

Carlo was acquired from the Boston Bruins in exchange for Fraser Minten and a 2026 first-round pick (top-five protected). Carlo was expected to help strengthen the Maple Leafs defensive corps on a team ready to compete, but the team was eliminated in seven games by the Florida Panthers.

It will be exciting to see who takes Carlo’s place in the lineup as the Maple Leafs practice Monday at the Ford Performance Center.
