Man Utd outcast Mainoo ‘in a good place’ despite uncertainty

Man Utd interim boss Darren Fletcher says Kobbie Mainoo is “in a good place” despite the uncertainty hanging over his future at the club.

The 20-year-old has struggled for playing time this season after falling out with former head coach Ruben Amorim, who was sacked from his position this week.

The midfielder returned to the matchday squad this week, coming off the bench in the second half of Wednesday’s 2-2 against Burnley at Turf Moor, after recovering from a calf problem.

Mainoo has not yet started a single game in the Premier League after requesting a move out on loan at the start of the season, but he may get more minutes at Man Utd as the club looks for a new manager.

“He seems to be in a good place. Kobbie doesn’t give you much, so you wouldn’t know if he was in a good place or not so good,” Fletcher said with a laugh. ‘That’s how he is. That’s his natural way of doing things.

“But I know him well and I’ve known him for a long time. I’ve seen him all season and I’ve had conversations with him in general, but he’s in a good place.”

“I know Kobbie and I think he knows me and he knows (interim first-team coach) Travis Binnion, so he’s comfortable in his environment, he’s in a good place and he’s trained well.”

Fletcher could hand Mainoo his first start for Man Utd since the League Cup defeat to Grimsby Town in August when the Red Devils hosted Brighton in the FA Cup on Sunday.
