Manchester United are reportedly set to contact club legend Michael Carrick soon about the possibility of becoming interim boss following the sacking of Ruben Amorim.
Amorim fired
Earlier today news broke that United had made the decision to sack Amorim after 14 months in the dugout as head coach.
There were claims that Amorim’s relationship with football director Jason Wilcox had broken down, causing a rift between the pair. Wilcox had reservations about Amorim’s tactical inflexibility, which contrasted with Amorim’s own dissatisfaction with transfer promises that he believed had been broken early in January.
Amorim’s controversial press conference after Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Leeds at Elland Road appears to have been the final straw for the United hierarchy.
United subsequently released a statement confirming that they have parted ways with Amorim. The club also announced that Under-18 boss Darren Fletcher will take charge of the first team ahead of Wednesday’s meeting with Burnley at Turf Moor.
Now further details have emerged as United begin their search for Amorim’s permanent replacement.
According to journalist Ben Jacobs, United’s plan is to appoint a permanent manager in the summer and an interim manager until the end of the season. Fletcher will be in charge while an interim search is conducted.

This was supported by Pete Hall of The i Paperwho writes that Carrick is a leading candidate to become United’s interim head coach.
United make Carrick decision
According to the news source, “Michael Carrick is one of the top contenders to be interim head coach of Manchester United until the end of the season, when the club will look to appoint a permanent successor to Ruben Amorim.”
“While the situation has been described as fluid with no one expecting to be in the hunt for a new manager until a few days ago, The i Paper understands that the current plan is for Darren Fletcher to take charge of the trip to Burnley on Wednesday and possibly the match against Brighton afterwards.”
Hall added: “It is unclear at this stage whether Carrick would be interested in the role, but United are expected to make an approach in the coming days.”
Carrick is currently a free agent after leaving Championship outfit Middlesbrough in the summer.
The former United midfielder previously managed three United games as interim manager following the departure of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in November 2021.
With Carrick temporarily at the helm, the Red Devils remained undefeated, beating Villarreal and Arsenal, while holding Chelsea to a draw.
