A shift in outside the season
After signing a maximum contract extension with the Los Angeles Lakers, Luka Doncic wasted time to celebrate. After a short stop in Las Vegas, where he caught a Backstreet Boys show with teammates, Doncic went to Slovenia to start the preparation for Eurobasket.
Doncic now trained with his national team, was confronted with well -known questions about his conditioning. Speaking with Slovenian Outlet Siol.net, as translated by Eurhoops.net, the All-NBA guard appealed to his physical transformation.
“There have always been questions about my fitness, but I thought I also played great,” said Doncic. “This year we approached things differently. Last summer was rough – I played until June and then immediately jumped into Olympic qualifications. This time I had more time and a better plan.”
Training routine becomes habit
Doncic noted that although his new training schedule was initially difficult, the consistency helped him to adjust.
“In the beginning it was not easy, but then it will be a habit. We will see how it translates into games – I have not played since the NBA season ended and I have just started scrimming again,” he explained.
His comments reflected similar statements during his availability of media in Los Angeles. With improved conditioning, Doncic could work more efficiently and perhaps avoid the fatigue in the middle season that has occasionally plagued him in the past.
Eyes on Eurobasket and the NBA season
Doncic and Slovenia will come across Germany in a series of exhibition matches before it will be opened on 28 August Poland. For Lakers, head coach JJ Redick will be the health of Doncic, together with that of LeBron James, the key during the long NBA season.
If the improved fitness of Doncic leads to better endurance and fewer injuries, he can raise his game to a different level. All eyes will be his performance in Eurobasket as an example of what could be in the NBA season of 2025–26.
