Liverpool and Chelsea spent a lot of money between them during the Summer Ransboekenster 2025, but it could have been more. Both clubs were on the market for a new central defender who eventually did not arrive, and it turned out that they had similar goals.

Liverpool wanted to sign a center-back to compete with Ibrahima Konate and new addition Geovanni Leoni to be Virgil van Dijlk’s partner, and they almost brought Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace. In the meantime, Chelsea came on the market after Levi Colwill had torn his ACL, but they did not succeed in bringing in anyone.

And it has now been revealed that both clubs were set by Ronald Araujo. According to Sport (via Football Spain), The Barcelona defender received offers from Liverpool, Chelsea, Tottenham and Juventus, but he made it clear (through his representatives) that he was not going to leave the La Liga Giants.

Araaujo was interested in Barcelona in January, but he eventually committed himself to a new five -year contract. Since then he has established himself as an important player, who can make a future movement difficult – although both Liverpool and Chelsea are willing to make a new attempt in 2026.

There is no doubt that Liverpool and Chelsea will draw at least one central defender in 2026, perhaps already in the transfer window of January. Araaujo is perhaps still on their radar and Barcelona can be open to offers if they continue to struggle financially.

But even if this is the case, it will be difficult to continue Araujo of the move, especially if he stays as a normal starter for Hansi film. As such, Liverpool and Chelsea can be forced to look somewhere else.
