Liverpool head coach Arne Slot admits Saturday’s clash with Newcastle United could be decisive in the race for a place in the top four.
The Reds are sixth in the Premier League, two points out of fourth place and only three points ahead of Newcastle heading into the showdown at Anfield.
“Every match is crucial,” Slot said. “But the way we have positioned ourselves makes every match even more important as we want to reach the top four.”
Slot expects another tough match against Eddie Howe’s team.
“Games against Newcastle are always difficult, for us and for them,” he added. “We have both had good results this week and playing at Anfield is always something to look forward to.”
Liverpool are coming off a 6-0 Champions League win over Qarabag, but Slot warned that one big win is not enough.
“Of course it helps,” he said. “We qualified for the last sixteen and played well, but one win is not enough at this club.”
The Dutchman also stressed that Liverpool must avoid costly mistakes as the season enters a critical phase.
“The closer you get to the end, the less chance you have to make mistakes,” says Slot. “We have already scored too many, especially when we have conceded late goals.”
“There is no room for that anymore.”
