Liverpool are planning a bold attempt to sign AC Milan winger Rafael Leao. Transfers.
The 26-year-old has been one of the best strikers not only in Serie A but also in Europe since joining San Siro from Lille, France in 2019.
After struggling to reach double figures in his first two seasons at the club, he came alive in the 2021/22 season, scoring 14 goals and providing 12 assists as the Rossoneri won their 19th Scudetto title, with the winger earning the Serie A Most Valuable Player award.
Although the club has struggled to reproduce that form, the Portuguese has remained consistent in his performances and has remained a key figure in helping them win the 2024/25 Italian Super Cup.
On the international stage, he is still one of the Seleção’s most important players. He won the UEFA Nations League this year and also played a key role in their World Cup qualification.
With more than 269 appearances and 138 goals, including six this season, the 26-year-old has amassed significant experience at the top level, prompting top clubs such as Liverpool to pursue his signing.
According to TransfersLiverpool have revived interest in signing Leao as a possible option to strengthen Arne Slot’s frontline.
The Reds looking to address their shaky form, which is currently lacking in goals, and have turned their attention to the Portugal international as an option to lead their revival.
Daring dive
It appears the Premier League champions will accelerate their efforts to sign Leao as the Spanish club claim the Merseyside giants are preparing a formal bid worth around £105 million to sign the winger in January.
Liverpool’s lack of attacking power was exposed in the 4-1 defeat to Eredivisie champions PSV Eindhoven at Anfield on Wednesday.
The defeat marks Liverpool’s ninth defeat in twelve games in all competitions and the third straight game in which they have been beaten by a three-goal margin, putting further pressure on Slot after a miserable start to both their domestic and European campaigns.
Reinforcements are now needed, especially because Mohamed Salah, Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak are underperforming.
Leao would be a key signing for the Reds, providing an immediate upgrade in attack while providing a seamless long-term successor on the right wing should Salah eventually leave the club.
