LIV steps in to negotiate Jon Rahm’s fines

LIV Golf is working with the DP World Tour to resolve the fines imposed on Jon Rahm and his Legion XIII teammate, Tyrrell Hatton, breakout tour CEO Scott O’Neil told Telegraph Sport.

Rahm left the PGA Tour to join LIV Golf on a multi-million dollar contract ahead of the 2024 season, and Hatton joined his team. The golfers joined the PIF-sponsored competition knowing they would be fined and suspended if they competed in events without permission from the DP World Tour.

The golfers appealed the fines to maintain their participation in the Ryder Cup, and both played key roles in the European team’s 15-13 win over Bethpage Black in September in Farmingale, New York.

LIV Golf has paid the fines in the meantime. However, several golfers on the tour have said there will be a rule change next season: players who want to remain members of both tours will have to pay the fines themselves.

“This is something that needs to be resolved and I look forward to that day,” O’Neil told Telegraph Sport. “We are having constructive conversations with Guy Kinnings (DP World Tour CEO) and his team. We hope that before the season starts we can all come together for the good of golf and put this behind us,” he said.

Rahm has publicly stated that he has no intention of paying the fines. “I’m not keen on fines,” he said last September. “I have no intention of paying them, and we will continue to try to discuss with them (the DP World Tour) how we can make this happen,” he insisted throughout the season. Rahm repeated his overall individual win at LIV this year and went on to lead Legion XIII to its first team title.

The rules of golf are relatively complicated compared to other sports because they are played outdoors, close to nature and animals. Respecting the rules is a fundamental element in the game of golf, which, almost always based on self-control and the free conscience of the players, often produces distorted results, sometimes consciously, but often unconsciously or through carelessness, due to the inability of many players to adhere to the rules of the game. In addition to the rules, golf adheres to a code of conduct, called etiquette, which generally means that the game is played with respect for the golf course and other players. Etiquette is an essential part of this sport.
