Youri Tielemans made an immediate impression from the bench at Aston Villa as they beat Basel 2-1 in the Europa League.
After Flavius Daniliuc canceled out Evann Guessand’s opener before half-time, substitute Tielemans scored the winner at half-time for Unai Emery’s side, moving them up to third in the league stage and level with leaders Lyon.
It was an end-to-end start with Matty Cash and Dominik Schmid both going close, but Guessand made the breakthrough after 12 minutes when he scored on the spin in a crowded box after Xherdan Shaqiri failed to clear a corner.
Leo Leroy saw a goal disallowed for offside just before the half-hour mark, but Shaqiri made amends for his earlier mistake when his cross from a free kick was guided past a helpless Marco Bizot by Daniliuc.
Emery replaced Cash with Tielemans for the second half, and his decision paid off after just seven minutes when Tielemans curled the ball into the bottom right corner with ease to put Villa ahead.
Guessand and Jadon Sancho both came close to finishing third for the Premier League team, with Metinho firing over the bar at the other end as Villa retained all three points and recorded their eighth consecutive win in all competitions.

Data Debrief: Villa breaches the Basel Fortress
It was a tight battle at St. Jakob-Park, with Basel producing 0.83 expected goals (xG) from 11 attempts and Villa’s 0.42 from seven shots, but Tielemans managed to separate the teams in Switzerland.
In addition to his goal, the Belgian captain created one chance, completed 24 of his 26 passes (92.3%) and won 100% of his midfield duels (four) to help Villa over the line.
Villa is also the first time since Belenenses in October 2015 that Basel has been defeated away from home in the Europa League, completing a ten-match unbeaten run (W8 D2) for the Swiss side.
