The British and Irish lions have called for versatile Ireland Jamie Osborne as cover for Blair Kinghorn – although the shot could still recover from a knee injury on time to appear in the three tests against the wallabies.

Kinghorn suffered a bang on his leg during the victory at the Brummbies in Canberra and underwent a scan in Adelaide on Thursday in the midst of the fear that his tour is over.

The 28-year-old, who came late with the touring party after he helped Toulouse to the top 14 Triumph, has received positive news and will stay with the team while his return to the training will be managed in the coming days.

After he had already lost Elliot Daly in the Tour on a broken forearm, head coach Andy Farrell gave himself extra coverage in the middle and full-back by calling Osborne that can play in both position.

The 23-year-old made his Ireland debut last year and was part of the Leinster side, which last month secure the title United Rugby Championship, with the bank in the final against the Bulls.

Osborne started the Ireland test against Georgia in the No 13 shirt last week and leaves Irish camp prior to their meeting with Portugal on Saturday. He will offer extra training coverage next week prior to the first Lions test against Australia in Brisbane.

Daly was replaced in the team by Owen Farrell, who will first appear this weekend against the Tour against the AUNZ Invitational XV.
