Ousmane Dembélé was crowned the winner of FIFA The Best 2025 award following the votes cast by captains of FIFA affiliated national teams. If Lionel MessiWhen the vote became public, questions quickly emerged why Cristiano Ronaldo did not take part in the voting process despite his long-standing role as Portugal captain.

Unlike the Ballon d’Or, the selection process for The Best involves votes from coaches and national team captains, along with media representatives and fan votes in certain categories. In his role as captain of Argentina, Messi took part in the process despite not being nominated for The Best for the first time in 18 years.

But even though he was not among the contenders for the Best XI or the main prize, Messi still took part in the voting in several categories. For Best Player of the Year, the Argentine legend selected Ousmane Dembélé in first place, followed by Kylian Mbappé in second place and Lamine Yamal in third placewith the last two finishing in positions other than the Ballon d’Or rankings.
