There was a pitching duel between the two starters in this one in this by the first five innings of the competition. But Tampa Bay broke through with a run in the first half of the 6th inning when Yandy Diaz hit a solo-home run in the seats under the stream stacks in the right-hand center.
The Reds would come on the board in the second half of the inning with some help from the rays. With two on and two out, Austin Hays hit a hard grounder to Shortstop and it went under the glove of Taylor Wells, so that both TJ Friedl and Matt McLain could score and Cincinnati were 2-1.
Graham Ashcraft came in the 7th match and took over for Andrew Abbott. Tampa Bay would get something against him with a out when Jose Caballero walked and went to third place on a single by Jonny Deluca. With Josh Lowe on the record, the referee called what seemed to be strike three a ball, causing Terry Francona to barked out of the Dugout. The next pitch was hit for an RBI Single that bonded the competition. Francona was then ejected because he argued with the referee during the previous call.
The Reds received their own rally that went into the bottom of the inning and much of it came at the expense of the Rays -Bullpen that the Strikezone could not find. Spencer Steer led road with a walk and TJ Friedl took a 2-out walk to keep the collection alive. Reliever Bryan Baker then injured himself in the middle of Matt McLain and was replaced by Garrett Cleavinger, who came from the bullpen and ran McLain to load the bases. The LEFTY then led to Elly de la Cruz 0-2, but the Reds Shortstop worked a full count before he hit a Bloop single to place two runs and give the home team a 4-2 lead.
Tony Santillan worked around a single with three strikeouts in the first half of the 8th inning. During the bottom of the inning, the Cincinnati attack went to work while Tyler Stephenson left with a single and then Santiago Espinal, TJ Friedl and Matt McLain put together three straight 2-out singles to place two more points and make a 6-2 ball game out of it.
Emilio Pagan took the hill in the first place of the 9th to get three without giving the leadership. He immediately received some help from Austin Hays in the left field when he made a full dive catch to record number one of the inning. Another line to the left followed, but this time Hays hardly had to move to catch it. A third straight to the left field put an end to the game when Cincinnati held up for a 6-2 victory and gave them a series of victory with one match between the Reds and the Rays.
