The Vancouver 2010 Olympic downhill champion, who took sensational first and second places in the sport’s premiere series on Friday and Saturday respectively, finished just over a quarter of a second behind the winner Alice Robinson of New Zealand.
Two-time Olympian from France Roman Miradoli finished third, with Italy Sofia Goggiathe Pyeongchang 2018 Olympic downhill champion, who kept Vonn off the podium, in third place.
Vonn’s first split showed a 0.15 second deficit to Robinson’s fast run. That figure more than doubled to 0.34 at the second marker, but the fast-moving Vonn dropped that to 0.20 in the third sector, ultimately finishing the race 0.27 seconds behind Robinson, the first New Zealander to win a World Cup race in Super G.
“I’m a little disappointed because I didn’t do so well in training,” the American athlete told FIS for TNT afterwards.
“I think I showed too much respect for the course in some places,” said the 41-year-old Minnesota native, who returned to the sport at this venue 12 months ago after a nearly six-year absence following her retirement in February 2019. Her goal is to compete in a fifth Olympic Games on Milan Cortina 2026 from February 6.
“I can ski much cleaner and more dynamically, and I just didn’t do that today.
“I think overall yesterday and today I was a bit tired after the win. It was so emotional and I found it hard to really get my energy back up in the beginning, but I think all in all it was a very solid weekend,” said the oldest Alpine Skiing World Cup winner.
Vonn, who is third on the all-time list of World Cup victories with 83, was joined in Sunday’s race by the record holder and compatriot Mikaela Shiffrinwhich has 104.
“I’m really happy,” Vonn continued. “I still have a lot to improve on for next weekend, but nothing I don’t think I can achieve. I always like to leave a place hungry and I’m very hungry. I’m hungry.”
The next World Cup speed races for alpine skiing will take place with a downhill and a super-G in Val D’Isere, France, on December 20 and 21 respectively.
