Lightning comes out on top in Rematch

Brandon Duhaime opened the scoring in the first period with his first, giving the Capitals a 1-0 lead. The Lightning would manage to take the lead before the end of the period. Emil Lilleberg also responded with his first goal of the season to tie the match.

After assisting Lilleberg’s goal, Jake Guentzel scored an own goal to give the Lightning a 2-1 lead after the first period. His goal would be the only power play goal of the game for either team.

John Carlson was credited with the equalizer in the second period. However, he was simply the last Capitals player to touch the puck. He hit the puck and hit Andrei Vasilevskiy’s chest. The puck slid under his armpit and bounced back behind him. Erik Cernak tried to control the ball and accidentally scored an own goal.

Normally these are moments that should change the momentum, but the Lightning managed to keep the game from getting out of hand. Brandon Hagel scored the go-ahead goal to give the Lightning the lead again. Charle-Edouard D’Astous continues his productive start to his career. He picked up his first career multi-point game, giving him five points in eight games.

It looked like they had an empty-net goal, but it was waved away after it was ruled offside. The result was the final score of the match.

The Lightning have a few days off before hosting the New York Rangers on Wednesday. The Puck Drop is scheduled for 7:00 PM. Meanwhile, the Capitals continue their road trip when they face the Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday in Raleigh. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m

Three stars of the game

  1. Brandon Hagel (one goal, one assist)
  2. Jake Guentzel (one goal, one assist)
  3. Charles-Edouard D’Astous (two assists)
