Lexus Supercar Teased Ahead of Upcoming Debut

Normally the news cycle slows down towards the end of the year, but thanks to Toyota, this will be a December to remember. We’ve already heard that a new supercar will come out of coverage in Japan on Friday morning, but it turns out there’s more to it than that. The GR GT will share the spotlight with a Lexus-badged model, and if that’s not enough, there will also be a track-only machine.

A new teaser image puts the street version of Toyota center stage. It may not actually wear the Toyota badge, as the auto giant recently announced plans to make Gazoo Racing a separate brand. Consequently, the car hiding in the shadows could be known simply as the GR GT.

But the most intriguing part of the teaser is the swoopy coupe on the left. It appears to have a more dramatic roofline than the GR. It is undoubtedly the Lexus version, as the taillight design matches that of the Sport Concept. We’ve adjusted the brightness of the image to reveal more design details, including the textured glass panel housing a vertical third brake light.

Both the GR and its Lexus counterpart are expected to share an already announced V-8. The newly developed gas engine has a displacement of 4.0 liters and uses a pair of turbochargers. Expect some form of electrification, but not necessarily a plug-in hybrid. For what it’s worth, the aforementioned Sport Concept was definitely a hybrid.

As for the right one, the Michelin track tires and full roll cage confirm that we’re looking at a race car. Louvers in the front fenders further distinguish it from the street-legal model, as do the plexiglass windows and recessed door handles. By the way, it will be interesting to see how the road car’s doors open, as there appears to be no visible handle. Both road cars share vertical air intakes in the lower portion of the fenders.

Some of you will remember that the track-only version first came out almost four years ago. In January 2022, Toyota brought a GR GT3 concept to the Tokyo Auto Salon without saying anything about a possible production version. However, our sister site Motorsport.com heard a year later that there would be a model with a Lexus badge and a license plate.

We imagine both will cost six figures, with the Lexus likely to command a premium over the Toyota while still staying well below the LFA’s $375,000 range. The high-performance vehicles are collectively described as future “all-new sports models”, although there is no mention of what badging they will carry.

Toyota and Lexus are now part of an expanded family of brands that also includes GR for performance vehicles and Century for top luxury. Daihatsu remains the value-oriented brand focused on the Japanese market.

Since the triple world premiere will take place on December 5 at 11am Japan time, Americans will see these cars on Thursday evening at 9pm Eastern. Europeans will have to get up super early on Friday, at 2 a.m. GMT, to discover the V-8 trio.
