Former Victorian pacer Nathan Street faded to finish ninth behind Copy Cat Queen on his WA debut last week, but he looks set to bounce back and take his first win in the state when he starts from the No. 1 barrier in the $23,000 Barbagallo Jaguar Land Rover Pace over 2130 meters at Gloucester Park on Friday evening.

Nathan Street, trained by Gary Hall snr, started from the outside at barrier eight last Friday evening and found himself in last position before making a quick sprint to race into the wind midway through the race. The middle sections of 400 meters were run in 28.3 seconds. and 28.5 sec. and Nathan Street withered after his hard run.

“He’s a very good horse,” said Stuart McDonald, who will ride the four-year-old Lazarus gelding in a race for the first time. “He’s had a few issues and came way behind the eight ball and if we’d had him right he would have been the No. 1 Golden Nugget hope of the stable, even though we have two runners, Franco Motu and Alta Tribune in the race, as well as Junior’s Chasing Rex.

“If he takes the lead on Friday evening, which I think he can, he will catch up a bit. His work this morning (Wednesday) was good. He is a fast horse and I am sure he will prove that he is a very good horse.”

Promising colt Control The Room gets his third start in eight days for trainer Ryan Bell when he starts from the No. 1 barrier in the $21,000 Barbagallo Alfa Romeo Pace over 2130 meters.

He will be driven for the first time by Jack Callaghan, who said: “He looked sharp when he won at Northam last Saturday, a night after running in the WA Derby. He has a good draw and should go close.”

At Northam, piloted by Liam Elliott, Control The Room enjoyed an ideal passage, one-out and two-back, before reeling off a strong closing thrust to win by more than a length from pacesetter and favorite Major Miki Whitby.

In the WA Derby at Gloucester Park the previous evening, Control The Room raced in the one-out, two-back position, but enjoyed little luck as he raced into the confined space on the final circuit and finished seventh behind Runkle Crunch.

Leading trainers Greg and Kye Bond have a strong hand with four of the runners in the field of eight, and Deni Roberts gives punters a valuable edge by electing to handle Troubadour from barrier six ahead of stablemates Captains Creek (Tom Nally; barrier two), Mad Monday (Donald Harper; barrier seven) and Rumble Strip (Stuart McDonald; barrier eight).

“I’m not sure what to make of Troubadour’s point (ninth) in the Derby last week,” Roberts said. “He was four deep at the bell, and this week’s small field should give him a better chance.”
