Lawson praises permane’s approach at Racing Bulls | Racer

Liam Lawson believes that the stability that recently appointed Racebulls boss Alan Permane has shown by continuing to run things in a similar way if predecessor Laurent Mekies is probably the key to the team that retains its form.

Permane was promoted last month to Team Principal at Racing Bulls after Mekies had moved to Red Bull to replace Christian Horner. It is the first time that Permane has served as a team head, but the first two rounds under his leadership have delivered the top eight finishes in both Belgium and Hungary, and Lawson believes that his new boss has done well to limit the disruption that could have been caused by the change.

“A team needs stability, and when there is no stability, it is a very hard working environment to be in,” Lawson told Racer. “It is difficult for the drivers to work with their side of the garage, they are many people, many moving parts in a Formula 1 team, so to make everyone work collectively is just very important.

“I think that was probably the target for Alan who came into the position of Laurent, and something that he has achieved very well [at Spa-Francorchamps and the Hungaroring]And it is probably probably now to continue. ‘

Permane joined Racing Bulls as racing director at the beginning of 2024 after he had spent his entire Formula 1 career at Enstone – most recently as sports director for Alpine – for that. Lawson sees similarities in the experience that both permanent and mekies have in F1, and believes that their close working relationship has also helped with the transition.

“Because of the position in which they have both been – Alan’s position that has been working with Laurent in recent years in a sort of main position on the technical side, and they both have technical backgrounds, they are both technically very advanced,” he said.

“And I think honestly, with Alan who works with Laurent, he has seen exactly how he works, and to be honest, not really much has changed. I think that Alan’s approach will continue with what Laurent had done anyway.

“It works very, very well and so it sees, apart from that it only sees less of Laurent, seeing him wearing different kit. That is really the only big difference at the moment.”
