LAFC and Inter Miami set record MLS attendance for season opener at Coliseum – Inside World Football

February 23 – The opening match day of the new Major League Soccer between Los Angeles FC and Inter Miami CF brought a record 75,673 fans to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, the largest crowd ever for an MLS opening weekend.

It doesn’t hurt when the GOAT, Lionel Messi, comes to town as records follow the Argentinian like silverware.

Saturday’s attendance also ranks as the second-highest attendance in MLS history, beaten only by the 82,110 who packed the nearby Rose Bowl for El Tráfico between the LA Galaxy and LAFC on July 4, 2023.

On the pitch, LAFC secured an emphatic victory, while off it the Colosseum proved an undeniable success. The star power of Messi and Heung-Min Son makes the event an ‘unmissable viewing experience’ for football fans in the region. LAFC’s regular home ground is BMO Stadium, but the venue’s capacity is 22,000. The Colosseum, just a stone’s throw away, was the logical choice for this fixture.

What makes this figure stand out is the global context. This weekend, with Real Madrid and Manchester City also on the calendar, this match on Saturday resulted in the highest stadium attendance in the world. In a country where soccer still struggles for front-page visibility, the MLS owned the world stage.

“History has been made. The largest crowd in MLS history tonight for the opening match between LAFC and Inter Miami,” said commissioner Don Garber wrote on social media.
