One Manchester United player everyone had to keep a close eye on this winter is Kobbie Mainoo.
Mainoo has struggled to really establish himself under United head coach Ruben Amorim, making his situation increasingly difficult.
Despite his obvious talent, Amorim is believed to harbor concerns over the 20-year-old’s defensive discipline, while also questioning whether the midfielder is quick enough to meet the demands of his system. As a result, the United Academy graduate has spent more time warming the bench than commanding the pitch.
The battle for playing time has left Mainoo increasingly frustrated, especially as the FIFA World Cup draws ever closer. He now worries his limited minutes could jeopardize his chances of breaking into Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the summer 2026 showpiece.
There have been suggestions, just like last summer, that the Mancunian could push for a loan move this winter. Yet conflicting reports maintain that he is considering the possibility of staying in his post and continuing the fight for his place.
However, speculation about a departure has not disappeared. Napoli are said to be enthusiastic, Everton have also been linked and the list of candidates only seems to be growing.
Turkish giants submit a bold proposal
According to Sabah, passed on via Sports witnessBesiktas has now approached the Red Devils with a bold proposal for Mainoo.
Sport Witness summarized the claims from Turkey:
“Beşiktaş are making contact to sign the youngster from Manchester United.
“The Turkish club wants Mainoo to be loaned out for eighteen months and has contacted the Premier League club.
“If they get an opening from the Red Devils, they will push forward and probably try to convince the player.”
It is undoubtedly a bold move from Besiktas, although United’s response seems obvious.
An eighteen-month loan is a downright ridiculous proposition; one that, if INEOS were to accept, would leave many bewildered.
With Mainoo yet to sign a new contract and his contract running until the summer of 2027 (although United have the option to extend for a year), sanctioning such a long loan period would hardly sit well at Old Trafford.
Trigger for other suitors
While Besiktas are keen to take advantage of Mainoo’s restlessness, INEOS may have more reasonable offers to weigh up.
In reality, the Turkish side’s bold proposal may have done little more than spur other candidates into action, potentially accelerating the race for United’s in-demand midfielder.
