If you have ever used Intellij idea, Pycharm or Rider, you have probably already felt the impact of jet brains. But what happens if one of the world’s most trusted toolmakers for software development starts to ask whether developers should fully reconsider their identity?
In this episode of Tech Talks Daily I caught up with Kirill Skrygan, the CEO of Jetbrains. The story of Kirill is something that many developers will admire. In 2010 he came to JetBrains as a junior developer and worked steadily through the ranks. Along the way he helped launch new products, led remotely during the pandemic and now sends the company in the AI era.
This is not just about adding AI functions to tools. Kirill challenges long-term assumptions about what it means to be a software engineer. He believes that we are introducing a new chapter where non-technical makers will build their own tools, and where proactive AI agents will help retain and even update code automatically. It is a daring vision, but one of the practical experience and responsibility.
JetBrains creates intelligent tools for software development that are familiar with more than 15 million users and 88 Fortune Global Top 100 companies.
We have investigated how AI lowers the barrier for making software, what that means for traditional developers and why Kirill believes that the shift will not devalue their skills, but will evolve earlier. He shared insights into JetBrains’s own AI agent, Junie, who is already being used in production environments. He also spoke about Kineto, their no-code platform designed for a new generation of makers, including those who want to build apps without an computer science background.
There is also a fair discussion about the friction points of this new Golf, especially when non-engineers build tools that must be protected and maintained later. Kirill did not shy away from the complexity of that challenge, but he is optimistic that the industry can solve it.
Towards the end of the conversation we have thought about the role of Jetbrains as an independent company that does not chase or relieve VC financing. This independence gives them the freedom to build what developers actually need, instead of what looks good on a press release.
This episode is a thoughtful view of the future of software development, leadership from within the codebase and the evolving relationship between people and AI in one of the most fundamental professions of Tech. If you are a developer, CTO, product manager or are just curious about how AI changes the vessel of coding, he is worth your time.
